A good pressure washer hose has the same design principle as a hydraulic hose. The essential design is as follows:
1. Inner Core - Here is the inner core in which the water flows.
2. Wire Wrap - This is the wire wrapper that surrounds the inner core and shields it from deterioration. This wrapping is in a braided arrangement which allows the hose to curve freely whilst having adequate protection. Most hoses under 4500 psi ratings have single wire wraps and are generally known as "single wire or R-1? hoses. Hoses intended for psi ratings of 5,000 or higher and hoses designed for hot water use have two wire braids and therefore are referred to as "2-wire or R-2? hoses.
3. Outer Cover - The best covers are rubber. Thermoplastic protected hoses are popular on pressure washers designed to be marketed at a economical selling price. If high quality is essential to you I would be sceptical of products which are offered with thermoplastic hoses as standard.
Exception: The most notable exception is in the scenario of sewer jetting. In such a case the pressure washer is built to unblock and clear sewer lines. For this usage 1/4" and 1/8" thermoplastic hoses are a benefit because of the ability to make extreme flexes within tubes.
The standard size for pressure washer hoses is 3/8"OD (outside diameter). Mainly because nearly all pressure washers have a rating somewhere between 3-5 gallons each minute flow. If your system meet or exceed a flow rate of 5gpm or if you're planning on using more than 100' of hose continuously then take into consideration 1/2" OD hose. Many cheaper pressure washers of suspicious quality promote pressure washers with 1/4" thermoplastic coated hoses in 25' lengths. For me personally it has been a tip to investigate quality issues further ahead of any investment. Conventional quality hoses are available in 50 ft lengths.
TIP: If you are intending to work with 100 ft plus hose continuously don't purchase a 100 ft hose, buy several 50-foot hoses and link them with each other as in that way should a hose go bad or wear out you can keep working and you won't lose a really highly-priced hose.
A black or red-colored rubberized hose may leave marks on floors, this is often a issue when pressure washing roof tiles or when doing flat work on concrete. In such cases use blue or gray covers as these do not leave marks or scuffs. These are generally known as "non-marking hose".
Yellow coverings are usually made so the hose is much more resistant to the issues of oil, grease, and animal fats, which are often employed in rendering plants and other industrial applications. For anyone who is working at heights, keep in mind all of the weight of your pressure washer hoses when full of water can be tugging on the hose fittings.
